Overview

The role diet plays in the prevention and treatment of acne has long been debated by dermatologists and researchers. According to "Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies," some studies suggest that some people can prevent acne by making certain dietary changes. However, "Clinical Dermatology" states that some types acne, such as nodulocystic acne, can only be appropriately treated with medication. Therefore, if you are currently suffering from acne, you should visit your dermatologist to discuss your treatment options.

Step 1

Reduce your consumption of milk products. "Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies" mentions that some researches have found that eating dairy products may increase some people's likelihood of developing acne. However, "Contemporary Nutrition" warns that you must replace your diary consumption with other high calcium foods to prevent bone problems. Fortified orange juice and soy milk are good alternatives to cow's milk.

Step 2

Limit the amounts of foods you eat that are low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index is a scale used to determine how quickly the carbohydrates in a food are broken down by the body. The higher the number on the glycemic index, the greater the blood glucose rises after eating the food, says "Contemporary Nutrition." According to "Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies," eating foods high on the glycemic index may increase your odds of developing acne, and therefore suggests that you choose foods with a lower glycemic index. For example, a doughnut is 76 on the glycemic index whereas low-fat soy yogurt is 15 on the glycemic index, according to "Contemporary Nutrition."

Step 3

Lower your iodine intake. Though some iodine is essential for overall health, "Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies" suggests that too much may increase your chances of developing acne. Typically, seafood is high in iodine, says, "Contemporary Nutrition," but can enjoyed as part of a healthy, balanced diet approximately twice per week.
