How to Pick Skin Care

The skin care products you choose go beyond beauty. Taking care of your skin protects it from the sun and environmental factors. Proper skin care also helps your skin stay younger-looking, reducing wrinkles and making your skin look fresh. Customized skin care based on your skin type makes a difference in the outcome, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The organization emphasizes the importance of moisturizing and protecting your skin from the sun regardless of skin type.

Step 1

Analyze your skin type. Choose skin care products that are made for your skin type, whether you have dry, oily, sensitive or combination skin. Identify problem areas in your skin, such as acne, signs of aging or skin conditions.

Step 2

Assess your current skin care products and how they make your skin feel. Use this analysis to pick new skin care products. For example, if your cleanser leaves your skin feeling tight or dry, choose a cleanser that is not as harsh.

Step 3

Purchase a gentle cleanser without fragrance. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing an oil-free cleanser containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

Step 4

Buy a moisturizer that matches your skin type. Choose a non-comedogenic moisturizer that is lightweight for oily skin. Purchase a moisturizer with SPF 15 for daytime use.

Step 5

Choose an exfoliating face wash to use once a week. Keep your skin type in mind, selecting an exfoliating scrub that matches.

Step 6

Watch for signs of irritation, such as redness, dryness or irritation, with your new skin care products. Discontinue use of the skin care products if such symptoms surface. Visit a dermatologist if you have difficulty finding products that don't irritate your skin.
