Overview

Pores are tiny openings in the skin through which sweat and sebum (oil) come out. These tiny openings also allow skin care products, debris and other undesirable impurities to enter the skin. Periodic cleansing of the pores is important as an accumulation of waste enlarges the pores and makes them more noticeable. Part of the cleansing process includes opening the pores so extraction can be easily done.

Step 1

Remove surface dirt and dead skin that prevents access to pores. Do this by cleansing your skin with a mild cleanser and then exfoliating it. You can also use sugar to exfoliate your skin by gently rubbing it on your skin for about 20 seconds, then thoroughly rinse the sugar from your face with warm water. Do not leave the sugar on your skin for more than a minute.

Step 2

Gently massage your skin with the pads of your fingers, using cold cream. Gently stroke your cheeks in an upward direction with the bottom side of your four fingers, using the four fingers on both hands alternately. Make small circles on your forehead with the ends of your fingers, and make small circles running from your mouth to the front of your ears. Tap your skin lightly with the ends of your fingers. This type of gentle massage opens the pores. Blot cold cream from your face with a tissue, and then wipe your face with a warm moist cotton pad. Do not wipe with an astringent as alcohol will close the pores.

Step 3

Try steam. Position a facial steamer about 16 to 18 inches away from your face and let the steam work to open your pores. Place the steamer a shorter distance away from your skin if your skin seems to be thick or oily. Let the vapor work on your skin for ten minutes. If you do not own a facial steamer, use a bowl of very warm water. Take a towel and place it over your head and position your face about 16 inches away from the water in the bowl. Be very careful not to burn yourself from the steam.
