Overview

Pores are openings in your skin that excrete substances such as sweat and oil. They can become blocked by bacteria, oil and dirt, which can cause acne. This skin condition may result in inflamed pustules that can rupture into open lesions when left untreated. Acne is especially common during adolescence, when oil production is at its highest level. You can open the pores in your children with home remedies that include steaming, castor oil and vitamin C.

Step 1

Boil water and pour it into a bowl. Place your child's face at least 12 inches but no more than 18 inches from the hot water. Cover your child's head with a towel and allow the steam to accumulate on your child's face. This will cause sweating and will allow the pores on your child's face to open. Remove the towel from your child's head after 5 to 10 minutes and wipe the sweat away.

Step 2

Prepare the correct mixture of oil for your skin type. The Oil Cleansing Method website recommends a blend of 90 percent sunflower oil and 10 percent castor oil for dry skin. Average skin should get a blend of 80 percent sunflower oil and 20 percent castor oil and oily skin should get a blend of 70 percent sunflower oil and 30 percent castor oil. Pour a tablespoon of the blended oil into one of your hands and rub your hands together. Apply the oil to your child's skin and gently rub it in with your fingertips for about 3 minutes. Wipe the oil away with a soft washcloth. The natural oil, dirt and sweat will bind to the blended oil and allow the pores to open.

Step 3

Place cotton pads in a bowl of lemon juice until they're soaked. Apply the cotton pads to your child's skin where the pores are closed. Keep the cotton pads in place for at least 15 minutes before removing them. Lemon juice contains vitamin C, which causes your child's skin to slough off dead skin cells more quickly. This helps the pores in your child's skin remain open.
