Overview

Collagen is an important structural protein. About 1/4 of the body's proteins are collagen, according to the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics. Collagen gives human skin its elasticity. When collagen breaks down, skin begins to sag and wrinkle. Collagen degradation is a natural part of the aging process. However, with proper treatment, you can jump-start increased natural collagen production for healthier, younger-looking skin.

Step 1

Use UV-blocking sunscreen whenever you will be outside for more than 30 minutes. According to Northwestern University, UV-rays can degrade collagen. If you eliminate this source of degradation, it is easier for your body's natural collagen production to combat normal age-related collagen degradation.

Step 2

Eat a diet rich in vitamin C or take a daily vitamin C supplement. The Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics explains that vitamin C is required for your body to make collagen. Some topical vitamin C creams also help foster collagen production. Cellex C, Avon's Anew Formula C and Physician Elite are recommended by the University of Maryland Medical Center for collagen production.

Step 3

Apply tretinoin-based lotion to your skin once daily. Tretinoin is clinically proven to increase your body's natural collagen production. However, tretinoin lotions are only available by prescription, so you'll need to schedule a consultation with your doctor. Always apply the lotion at night, preferably before bed, because tretinoin can increase your sensitivity to sunlight, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Step 4

Obtain collagen injections at your dermatologist's office. Collagen injections are typically seen as a temporary treatment. However, some patients experience increased natural collagen production after obtaining injections, according to Southwestern Medical Center.

Step 5

Undergo microdermabrasion therapy. During microdermabrasion therapy, a thin layer of skin is removed. This prompts your body to naturally regrow new skin cells and collagen at the treatment site, according to surgeon and physician, Dr. Philip S. Chau. The end result is a fresh, healthier cellular structure and new collagen production.
