Overview

Acne is a skin condition characterized by inflamed pustules. Its primary cause is blocked pores due to excess oil production and it may be further aggravated by the presence of certain species of bacteria in the skin. Acne can produce scarring when the pustules rupture and fail to heal. A dermatologist can treat acne scars with several procedures.

Step 1

Undergo dermabrasion. This procedure consists of abrading the upper layers of skin through some mechanical means. The dermatologist normally uses a tool with a diamond-tipped head. This head typically rotates between 18,000 and 35,000 time per minute to efficiently remove the skin. The results are highly variable as they are highly dependent on the skill of the operator.

Step 2

Select laser resurfacing. This technique uses the heat from a laser to ablate the upper layers of skin. The laser must produce light with a wavelength that's readily absorbed by the skin. The types of lasers that are most commonly used to resurface the skin are yttrium, aluminum and garnet (YAG) lasers or carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers. Treatment with a YAG laser generally requires a shorter recovery time but is also a newer technology.

Step 3

Choose a chemical peel. This approach uses acid to remove acne scars. The dermatologist applies a solution of glycolic acid with a concentration between 20 and 70 percent. The solution dries to a semi-solid consistency and is peeled off after dissolving the desired layers of skin. A chemical peel is generally used only for mild scarring.

Step 4

Perform aftercare for scar treatments. Chemical peels typically require nothing more than medication for pain and swelling. Laser resurfacing and dermabrasion may require you to change a wound dressing each day for several days until the skin can form a scab.
