Overview

Acne occurs when the sebaceous glands in the skin produce too much sebum. This oily substance can block the pores, which then can erupt into inflamed pustules. Severe cases can leave acne scars in the skin. These scars may be cleared by removing the upper layers of skin in some manner. The traditional method of accomplishing this is dermabrasion, a technique that uses some physical method of abrading the skin.

Step 1

Consult with a dermatologist. Dermabrasion is most suitable for patients whose skin is neither very light nor very dark. You should also be free of blood-borne disease,s such as hepatitis or HIV. The dermabrasion procedure will disperse droplets of blood in the air which can be very dangerous to medical personnel if you have these diseases.

Step 2

Follow your dermatologist's preoperative instructions. This may include abstaining from the use of cisretinoic acid (Accutane) for up to six months prior to receiving dermabrasion. Some dermatologists believe that acne medication can increase the risk of abnormal scarring from dermabrasion. Your dermatologist will also instruct you to begin taking anti-viral medication before the procedure. This will help you fight the risk of infection due to dermabrasion.

Step 3

Prepare for the dermabrasion procedure. The dermatologist will typically administer a mild sedative and a local anesthetic to numb the skin. You will then lie on your back with patches over your eyes if you are receiving dermabrasion on your face.

Step 4

Receive the dermabrasion. Dermabrasion should only be performed by a dermatologist skilled in this procedure as the results are highly dependent upon the operator's skill. The dermatologist will use a tool coated with diamond chips that rotates at a very high speed to remove the skin.

Step 5

Recover from the dermabrasion. Replace the dressing each day after you receive dermabrasion for approximately five days. You will be vulnerable to infection during this period, so you'll typically take antibiotics. You may also need medication for pain while your skin heals.
