Overview

Acne is a common skin condition that is typically treated with over-the-counter, commercially produced skin care products that contain strong chemical ingredients. These ingredients are designed to kill off acne-causing bacteria and to dry up acne pustules. Unfortunately, chemical acne creams and gels, such as benzoyl peroxide cream or salicylic acid gel, can cause the skin to become irritated, often causing redness, peeling or burning on the skin. Luckily, acne can be treated with natural items that can be found around the house.

Step 1

Cleanse the skin with oatmeal, which AcneIs.edu suggests can cleanse the skin without irritating it, and delivers nutrients such as vitamin E to the skin. Combine 1/2 cup raw oats and 1 cup boiling water into a bowl and let the mixture cool completely. Spread the mixture onto your skin and massage it in using circular finger movements for 3 minutes. Rinse off the skin with warm water. Repeat twice per day; once in the morning and again in the evening.

Step 2

Exfoliate the skin with baking soda, which is mildly abrasive and helpful in removing pore-clogging impurities without damaging the skin's delicate surface. Pour 2 tbsp. baking soda and 1 tbsp. water into a bowl. Scoop up the baking soda mixture with your fingers, and spread it onto your skin. Use your fingers to lightly massage the mixture in for around 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse off your skin with water. Repeat twice per day.

Step 3

Treat acne pustules with calamine lotion, which according to HealthGuidance.org calms irritation and dries out acne breakouts. Shake the bottle of calamine lotion well. Soak a cotton swab with the calamine lotion. Dab the calamine lotion onto active acne breakouts and allow it to dry. For spot treatments, leave the calamine lotion on the skin for 1 hour, then rinse it off with water. For overnight treatments, leave the calamine lotion on overnight, rinsing it off in the morning. Repeat once every night for best results.
