Overview

Teenagers are commonly afflicted with acne, but people in their 20s and 30s may also suffer. Acne on one's face may be undesirable enough, but many people that are afflicted with facial acne may also find acne on other areas of their body. Using a mild facial soap daily may cause this acne to disappear. For some people though, soap may just be the beginning. Acne creams or gels can combat acne too. Your dermatologist may even prescribe Accutane, an acne medication in pill form that should be taken for six months. He or she may even suggest dietary changes, though whether diet affects acne is not something that experts agree on. Still, the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology says that cutting back on dairy products that contain high levels of hormones may reduce acne because these hormones may stimulate oil production in humans.

Step 1

Wash your face each morning and night with a gentle facial cleanser. Cleanse your face from under your jaw up to your hairline, advises the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health. Use an antibacterial soap that your dermatologist approves of, advises the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.

Step 2

Wash any part of your body that is afflicted with acne using the same cleanser you use for your face. Common areas of the body that get acne are the shoulders, neck, chest, and back, but you can use a mild cleanser anywhere. Be sure to wash yourself off after you work out or sweat.

Step 3

Apply a topical medication once your skin is clean and dry. Use an acne cream every day, unless irritation or dryness occurs. Then, use the cream less often, such as every two or three days, as recommended by the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.

Step 4

Cut dairy products out of your diet for six months. One-third of the people who adopted this dietary change say their acne was significantly reduced by it, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. Alternatively, you can try to consume only dairy products, and foods containing dairy products, from companies that do not give their cows hormones. Horizon is one such company, but there are others. Local farmers markets are other places where you may find hormone-free dairy.

Step 5

Ask your dermatologist for a prescription for Accutane if your acne has still not disappeared. Take the Accutane for as long as prescribed, which is usually five to six months. One course of treatment will often cure severe acne for life, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.
