Overview

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the sebaceous glands produce too much of an oil known as sebum. Excess sebum blocks the pores, which can cause them to swell into painful nodules. You can make a variety of acne remedies at home from commonly available materials. These treatments can help your acne by reducing the amount of excess oil on your skin, keeping your pores clear and eradicating the bacteria that can make acne worse.

Step 1

Apply a homemade astringent to the oily parts of your skin. Tea tree oil makes an effective astringent, as it has anti-bacterial properties. Mix one part tea tree oil with 19 parts water to obtain a 5 percent solution of tea tree oil. You must dilute the tea tree oil because pure tea tree oil is much too strong for your skin. Use this solution very sparingly and only on the parts of your skin that are especially oily.

Step 2

Perform a homemade chemical peel to keep your pores clear. Spread a thin layer of honey on your acne and wait for it to dry. Rinse off the honey with water and soap, and pat your skin dry with a towel. A honey mask can remove the dead skin cells that are clogging your pores. Use manuka honey, which is made almost entirely from the manuka flower. Manuka honey is an excellent choice for treating acne since it also has strong antibacterial properties.

Step 3

Use a homemade disinfectant on your acne. Peel a clove of garlic and slice it open with a knife. Apply the cut end to your acne for five to 10 minutes per day. Garlic is a natural antibacterial agent due to the sulfur it contains. This can inhibit the growth of bacterial colonies that can grow on skin affected by acne. Perform this treatment with caution, as raw garlic juice can cause your skin to blister.
