How to Lighten Brown Spots on Your Face How to Lighten Brown Spots on Your Face

Overview

The brown spots on your face are caused by an extended period of time in the sun. UV rays of light from the sun damage your skin by killing the collagen and elastin, the chemicals in your skin that keep it looking young and fresh. This causes your skin to make more melanin, which is the chemical that causes your skin to turn a darker shade. While most people don't form brown spots on their face until they are middle aged, brown spots can happen to anyone who has been in the sun too long. You can lighten the brown spots on your face by using natural ingredients, washing your face the right way and staying out of the sun.

Step 1

Rub buttermilk onto the age spots on your face. Buttermilk has a natural ingredient in it that lightens the brown spots on your face. Buy a carton of buttermilk at the store, pour a half cup into a bowl and dip a cotton ball in the liquid. Rub onto the brown spots on your face and let evaporate. When applied every day, buttermilk can gradually lighten your brown spots.

Step 2

Rub lemon juice onto the age spots on your face. Like buttermilk, lemon juice also contain a natural bleaching agent that over time, can help lighten the brown spots on your face. Either squeeze juice from a real lemon into a bowl, or buy a bottle of lemon juice and pour into a bowl. Dip a cotton ball into the liquid and run on the brown spots on your face. Let the liquid evaporate.

Step 3

Rub skin cream onto your brown spots. The Mayo Clinic says you should buy an over the counter product to lighten the brown spots on your face, specifically hydroquinone, retinol and vitamin C. If those skin creams aren't doing the trick to lighten the brown spots on your face, your dermatologist can prescribe a stronger skin cream.

Step 4

Avoid UV rays from the sun. Sun is the main cause of the brown spots on your face, so you want to stay out of direct sunlight. You can actually lighten the brown spots on your face just by protecting the brown spots on your face from the sun. If you have to be outside, wear protective gear like a hat and sunglasses to protect your skin from the sun. Also, wear sunscreen on your face with an SPF of at least 30.
