Overview

Acne is the result of pores that have become blocked by an oily substance known as sebum. The pores can become inflamed and may erupt into pustules. These lesions may rupture into open sores, which can lead to scarring when the skin is unable to heal quickly. A dermatologist can frequently improve the appearance of an acne scar. This typically requires treatments such as dermal fillers, laser resurfacing, chemical peels and dermabrasion.

Step 1

Receive dermal fillers. Your dermatologist injects a substance under your skin that pushes out the deep-pitted scars that are common with acne. Collagen is the most common dermal filler but its results only last about six months. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a dermal filler that gives generally permanent results.

Step 2

Choose laser resurfacing. A resurfacing laser produces light with a frequency that the skin absorbs easily. The heat from the laser vaporizes the skin, allowing it to heal without the acne scars. Laser resurfacing is most commonly used to treat acne scars on the face. Lasers require a recovery period of up to 10 days, and facial skin tends to heal more quickly than other types of skin.

Step 3

Undergo a chemical peel. A chemical peel contains an acidic solution that removes the upper layers of your skin. The chemical peels used by dermatologists to remove scars are much stronger than the ones you use at home to remove surface imperfections. Chemical peels are most suited for superficial acne scars.

Step 4

Select a dermabrasion procedure. Your dermatologist uses a rotary tool to quickly abrade the surface of your skin. Dermabrasion requires a recovery period of up to five days and is most often used to remove acne scars on your body.
