The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) explains that acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the United States. The condition can impact individuals at any age and can be caused by a number of things. The AAD suggests research has revealed four key factors including excess oil, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation. Reducing these four factors can improve acne conditions on the skin. There are numerous over-the-counter and prescription treatment options. Finding the one that works for you requires experimenting and patience.

Step 1

Wet your face with warm water and apply a small amount of mild facial cleanser to your palms. Massage it gently into your face, avoiding the eyes and mouth. Rinse the solution off the skin to prevent further irritation. The Mayo Clinic suggests acne products may dry up oil, ill bacteria and promote sloughing of dead skin cells. Keeping the skin clean is the most important component of improving acne. Avoid overly fragranced cleansers, as they can dry the skin, making acne worse.

Step 2

Pat the skin dry and apply an acne spot-treatment product that contains benzoyl peroxide, sulfur or salicylic acid. Apply a small amount of the solution to areas where acne is most prevalent. This product should only be used once per day unless it is specified otherwise.

Step 3

Apply a thin layer of mild moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. Even though excess oil can cause acne, moisturizer should not be avoided, as dry skin can increase irritation. Commercial acne lotions may be beneficial or a general sensitive skin lotion can be used.
