How to Hide Large Pores
Large pores can be caused by heredity or factors such as aging. Among women, it is one of the most common skin complaints, according to skin care experts at Advanced Dermatology P.C. in New York. Pores are necessary to secrete oil, which lubricates and protects skin, and perspiration, which serves to cool the body. However, people don't necessarily want their pores to be seen, as small pores are associated with more attractive and younger-looking skin. If you've got large pores, you can use a combination of makeup and skin care techniques to hide them.
Prepare clean skin with a skin primer, available at drugstores or makeup counters. This helps to even your skin tone and blocks foundation from soaking into pores. Let this dry before applying other makeup.
Use a makeup sponge to apply your foundation. Choose a cream-to-powder or cream type foundation. These are better choices than liquid foundation to conceal large pores.
Dust your face with a large powder brush dipped in a loose translucent powder. This will make your skin tone appear more even and provide more coverage for your large pores.
Keep your skin clean. Washing twice a day with a gentle soap or face wash. This removes excess skin oil and impurities that can block and enlarge pores. Don't overdo it because over-washing can be detrimental to your skin, according to Australia's Children, Youth Women's and Health Services. Also, scrubbing too hard can enlarge your pores, advises Joshua L. Fox, M.D., F.A.A.D., a spokesman for the American Academy of Dermatology and medical director at Advanced Dermatology P.C. of New York.
Use toner only if you have skin that is still oily after washing. Use only if your skin feels soft and smooth after use rather than dry or tight, advises Susan C. Taylor, author of "Brown Skin: Dr. Susan Taylor's Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair and Nails." Taylor also recommends products that don't include alcohol or witch hazel.
Exfoliate your skin. This removes dead skin cells that can magnify the appearance of your pores. Choose a gentle product and use it once or twice a week to keep your pores free of debris.
Wear sunscreen and moisturize. Wearing sunscreen is extremely important, as sun damage is one cause of enlarged pores. Moisturizing will keep the skin supple and help it be more resilient, advises Australia's Children, Youth Women's and Health Services.
