How to Help Get Rid of Acne
Your body naturally produces sebum, an oil secreted from your pores to help lubricate hair follicles. However, sometimes your body has a tendency to create too much sebum, which gets mixed in with dead skin cells and results in what we know as acne. Acne can be both painful and embarrassing, as it leaves red inflamed areas on your skin. In addition to the acne treatment of your choice, whether it's medication or specialized commercial acne treatments, there are always a few extra things you can do to help control this problem.
Drink water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated and help you to flush away toxins. Drinking six to eight glasses of water each day can help keep your body thoroughly hydrated, which also aids in transporting nutrients through your system.
Avoid excess sunshine. A sunburn can make your acne worse and much more painful. If you plan on being outside on a sunny day for any length of time, apply a water-based sunscreen to your skin to help protect it. Oil-based sunscreens should be avoided, as they can block your pores and make your acne worse.
Keep fresh clean linens on your bed. Oils from your skin and hair transfer onto your sheets and pillowcase while you sleep and can find their way right back onto your skin, making acne worse. Change your pillowcase every couple of days and replace your sheets with clean ones at least once a week.
Wash your face twice daily with an antibacterial soap or an acne-specific soap. Avoid harsh scrubbing as this can aggravate the skin and cause pre-existing blemishes to open up, leading to scarring. Rinse your face well with warm water and gently pat your skin dry with a soft, clean, dry towel.
Keep your hands off your face and your hair pulled back. Oils in our fingertips and hair can make acne worse. Picking at blemishes or excessive squeezing can also lead to scarring and should be avoided.
