Acne is a chronic skin condition that is most commonly associated with adolescence, although some people experience acne outbreaks into their 30s and 40s. This condition is characterized by inflamed, raised pimples on the face, back, neck and chest. Acne is caused by excess sebum production by your skin's oil glands, although bacteria on your skin's surface and toxins in your bloodstream may contribute to this condition. Although food cannot heal acne, certain dietary choices may help reduce acne outbreaks. Check with your doctor before changing your diet to address acne.

Step 1

Add zinc-rich foods to your diet. Zinc is a trace mineral that may reduce the severity of acne breakouts, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Beans, eggs, pecans, mushrooms, soybeans and chicken are rich sources of natural zinc.

Step 2

Include fresh, chopped garlic in casseroles, soups and stir fry dishes. Garlic contains a chemical compound called allicin, which may help clear acne-causing bacteria from your skin, according to Phyllis Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." It may also boost immune system function.

Step 3

Consume foods rich in beta-carotene, such as carrots, bell peppers, alfalfa, broccoli and asparagus. Your body uses beta-carotene to manufacture vitamin A, a tamin that may help reduce acne breakouts, explains Balch. Consuming beta-carotene-rich foods also reduces your risk of vitamin A toxicity, because your body only converts beta-carotine into vitamin A as needed.

Step 4

Add foods rich in vitamin E to your diet. These foods include spinach, kale, brown rice, sweet potatoes and kelp. Vitamin E aids in the repair of skin cells, which may help reduce acne-related scarring, states Balch. It is also a potent antioxidant that may prevent free radical molecules from damaging inflamed skin pores.

Step 5

Increase your intake of high-fiber foods, such as nuts, seeds and whole grains. Dietary fiber helps clear toxins from your bloodstream, and may help prevent these toxins from causing acne lesions, notes Balch.

Step 6

Opt for soy-based milk and cheeses instead of dairy products. The enzymes and proteins in dairy products can cause allergic reactions that may trigger acne breakouts, according to Balch.
