Smooth, clear skin helps you look healthier and younger and boosts your confidence. Unfortunately, sometimes it seems like the universe is against you when it comes to this objective. Environmental factors, genetics, aging and your own habits all contribute to acne and bumpy-looking skin. Establishing a daily routine of skin care and changing bad habits to good ones can help you get the skin you want.

Step 1

Establish a skin care routine. Wash your face in the morning and evening with a facial cleanser that includes acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid. After showering, moisturize with a facial lotion that is marked non-comodogenic, meaning it won't clog your pores. If your skin is greasy or bumpy, use a facial toner before moisturizing to tighten up pores. Use an acne-fighting body wash if you have acne on other parts of your body.

Step 2

Eliminate bad habits from your daily routine. Don't touch your face during the day, as dirt and oil on your fingers can get into your pores. Always wash your face at night, especially if you wear makeup. Use a spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide on blemishes and don't pick at or squeeze them---this can cause scarring. Wash your hair regularly; oil and dirt in your hair can get on your face.

Step 3

Use an exfoliating facial scrub a few times a week to smooth out rough spots on your face and get rid of dead skin cells. For signs of aging, try a beta-hydroxy pad or facial serum containing hyaluronic acid to plump up the skin and lessen the appearance of fine lines.

Step 4

See a dermatologist if you're still having problems with acne and bumpy skin. You may need a prescription-strength acne medication or a procedure to remove milia, which are small cysts under the skin that look like bumps.
