Overview

Acne is characterized by the appearance of papules, pustules, cysts and nodules on your skin. It is caused by the plugging of pores by oils, which sometimes results in bacterial infection. Large acne lesions can then appear, causing your skin to become swollen and painful. Larger acne can take longer to heal, sometimes leading to facial scarring if left untreated. You can help speed the process by cleansing, medicating and moisturizing your skin.

Step 1

Cleanse your skin correctly by using a soap designed for sensitive skin types, which will not exacerbate large acne. Swollen, inflamed acne can become worse when bombarded with strong chemical ingredients that are in regular soaps. Lather up your face well and rinse the soap completely with water. Avoid scrubbing your skin, which can make large acne breakouts worse. Repeat twice per day.

Step 2

Medicate your skin with a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream, which will kill off acne-causing bacteria on your skin without exacerbating large acne. Squeeze a dime-sized amount of 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream onto your finger, and smooth it onto your skin gently. Glide your fingers over your skin, avoiding rubbing the cream in aggressively, until the cream is completely absorbed. Repeat twice a day after washing your face.

Step 3

Moisturize your skin regularly with an oil-free lotion. Many people neglect using a moisturizer, thinking it will cause more acne or exacerbate the acne that already exists. In reality, the skin can become too dry when it is treated exclusively with a benzoyl peroxide cream, which can cause your skin to overproduce oils in order to compensate for the dryness. Using an oil-free lotion will keep your skin properly hydrated without clogging pores. Apply a dime-sized amount to your skin, gently massaging it in until it is absorbed. Repeat twice per day after using the benzoyl peroxide cream.
