How to Get Rid of Stubborn Blackheads
Overview
Open comedones, more commonly referred to as blackheads, are those irritating little black specks that litter your complexion. When dirt and excess sebaceous oils become trapped beneath the surface of the skin, it leads to a raised black blemish on the skin. Blackheads aren't as visually obtrusive as whitehead pimples, but they can still be irritating. Aggressively treat stubborn blackheads that won't go away on their own or through daily hygiene practices.
Step 1
Fill the sink with hot water, enough so that there's noticeable steam coming off of it. You're going to want to expose the blackheads to the steam so it may be easier to fill up a bathtub or a large bowl.
Step 2
Wrap a towel over the area. If the blackheads are on your face, wrap the towel around your head. Make sure to do this while sitting down so as not to trip and fall.
Step 3
Hold the area over the hot water to steam the area. The towel will help to keep the steam in; just be careful not to scald yourself. The steam should make your skin feel very warm, but if it begins to feel too hot, move away from the steam immediately.
Step 4
Allow the steam to work on your skin for at least 5 minutes. The steam will help to open up the pores and soften the skin and dirt trapped underneath it.
Step 5
Remove the towel and set it aside. Begin removing blackheads with a flat blackhead remover. You can purchase one of these at a local beauty supply store. Always read and follow the manufacturers' instructions carefully.
Step 6
Wash your skin with an acne medicated soap. Soaps that contain benzoyl peroxide are effective in helping to eliminate acne. Rinse the skin well and pat dry with a soft clean dry towel.
