How to Get Rid of Pimples on Your Lips
Acne occurs when oil and bacteria builds up on the skin, clogging pores and hair follicles. However, what may look like acne on the lips may actually be a cold sore. Both acne and cold sores can go away on their own, but medical attention may be required if they are persistent or so painful that you are unable to talk or eat. Otherwise, acne can be treated with over-the-counter face washes that contain effective active ingredients.
Determine if the "pimple" is acne or a cold sore. A cold sore is generally gooey, red and crusty. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 2 and occur only on the lips. It can spread to other people by sharing drinks or kissing.
Place ice on the cold sore. The ice will reduce swelling and pain, making the cold sore appear less noticeable.
Leave it alone. In most cases, a cold sore will go away on its own within seven to 10 days. If the cold sore is particularly large or does not go away after 10 days, consult a dermatologist.
Consult a dermatologist for an antiviral medication. Taking an antiviral medication will help cold sores heal more quickly and decrease the pain associated with them, states the Mayo Clinic.
Determine if the pimple is truly acne. Acne may occur on or around the lips and on the rest of the face, and may be filled with pus, but does not appear gooey. Acne is caused by clogged, irritated pores and hair follicles under the surface of the skin.
Wash your lips and face twice a day with a face wash containing an effective active ingredient. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends a face wash containing benzoyl peroxide that is oil-free.
Consult a dermatologist for a prescription treatment. Prescription treatments include retinoids, oral antibiotics, prescription-strength benzoyl peroxide treatments and isotretinoin, also known as Accutane. Your doctor will determine the best treatment for you based on the type of pimples you have and how often your breakouts occur.
