How to Get Rid of Pimples on Your Back
Acne occurs when hair follicles and pores become clogged with oil that is released from the skin. When the pores are clogged, they can become irritated, causing a breakout. Breakouts can occur anywhere on the body but are most common on the face, chest and back. If you suffer from acne on the back area, clear away the oil and bacteria with an over-the-counter or prescription treatment, then take steps to prevent back acne from returning.
Wash your back twice a day with a medicated, over-the-counter body wash containing salicylic acid, suggests "Marie Clarie." Salicylic acid is an effective active ingredient that dries out excess oil, states the Mayo Clinic.
Apply a spot treatment containing benzoyl peroxide to stubborn pimples on the back before bed to dry up oil and reduce bacteria on the skin. Benzoyl peroxide is an effective over-the-counter acne treatment that dries up the pimple and smooths away dead skin cells, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Shower in cool or lukewarm water. Avoid scalding hot water, which can irritate the skin and make breakouts worse.
Wear loose cotton shirts. Wearing polyester or other synthetic materials will hold sweat and moisture against the body, creating clogged pores and a buildup of bacteria on the back. Cotton clothing breathes better than polyester, keeping the back dry and comfortable.
Consult a dermatologist if back acne does not clear up within several months. Your doctor can prescribe a medication like isotretinoin, which is designed for severe cystic acne, states the Mayo Clinic. Isotretinoin has a risk of severe side effects, including depression, thoughts of suicide and birth defects.
