How to Get Rid of Pimples on the Back
Between 40 million and 50 million Americans have acne, making it the most common skin condition as of 2010, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Your back is subject to the same manifestations of acne as the rest of your body: pimples, blackheads, pustules and cysts. The major contributing factors are excess oil, clogged pores, inflammation and bacteria. Fortunately, with effort and persistence you can eliminate or at least significantly reduce your back acne.
Keep your back clean. After you sweat, take a shower and exfoliate to decrease the chance of pores getting clogged with oil or dead skin cells. Use a gentle, water-based cleanser. This helps to remove excess sebum oil and is thus critical for getting acne under control, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The bacteria and dirt that build up on sheets and towels can contribute to body acne, so it is important to wash such items frequently.
Use a handheld bag instead of a backpack. A bag against the back can cause the area to sweat, increasing the chance of clogged pores. Additionally, the straps can irritate the skin on the back and thus contribute to acne.
Try an over-the-counter cream or ointment containing benzoyl peroxide. Such products are well-known for treating acne on the face, but they can be effective for acne elsewhere on the body, too, including the back. But be careful: They can bleach clothing.
Avoid tight clothing. It can trap sweat and bacteria against the skin and also irritate your skin. Natural fibers such as cotton are best, according to Epigee.org, especially when you are exercising.
Pursue medical treatment. A dermatologist can prescribe treatments stronger than home remedies and over-the-counter products. Some possibilities include topical antibiotics, oral antibiotics, the drug Accutane and, if you are female, oral contraceptives.
