How to Get Rid of Pimples After Shaving How to Get Rid of Pimples After Shaving

Overview

Little pimples that pop up after shaving are not pimples in the traditional sense. Most often, they are either ingrown hairs or the body's reaction to the injury of shaving. The bumps can get infected, particularly if you pick at them, which could lead to a pimple-like pustule, so you should not scratch, squeeze, pinch or dig at the bumps in an effort to get rid of them.

Step 1

Treat irritated bumps immediately with hydrocortisone cream. Hydrocortisone is a topical steroid, and it reduces inflammation. Two treatments a day for a couple of days should clear up the worst of the shaving pimples.

Step 2

Treat the entire area with rubbing alcohol. Many shaving rash preventatives and aftershave products for men contain alcohol as the primary active ingredient. While those products are intended to prevent the appearance of bumps, alcohol is also effective in treating bumps that have already arisen. It has the effect of drying out the topmost layer of the treated area, allowing the dry skin to slough off which inspires new cell growth beneath.

Step 3

Lance large pustules caused by ingrown hairs with a sterilized tool to release the fluid buildup. If you can see the hair peeking through, grab it with sterilized tweezers and gently tug. Don't pluck the hair or the skin could heal over and prevent the next one from growing, starting the cycle over again. Instead, just try to leave the hair exposed so that it can grow unobstructed. Many of the worst shaving bumps are caused by ingrown hairs.

Step 4

Use home remedies like witch hazel to help dry the shaving pimples. It's a less painful alternative to rubbing alcohol. Gently exfoliate using a washcloth or a mild scrub, then moisturize with an aloe-based product to help soothe and heal the area.

Step 5

Treat chronic shaving bump outbreaks with benzoyl peroxide. It is the primary ingredient in most over-the-counter acne treatments and preventatives. Shaving bumps that persist or reappear often begin to act like acne, trapping sebum in the hair follicles and producing puss. Benzoyl peroxide can heal these areas and help to prevent further outbreaks.
