Overview

Open pores can cause impurities and bacteria to become trapped in the skin, leading to acne breakout and cysts on the face. When the pores are minimized and reduced, they can remain clear of acne-causing substances. Getting rid of open pores helps keep the skin smooth and acne-free. Open pores can be closed by following a few simple steps that will shrink and tighten the skin and pores.

Step 1

Steam the face to empty the pores of trapped oils, dirt and bacteria. Fill a medium-sized bowl with hot, steaming water. Place a towel over your head, and lean over the bowl. Be careful not to hold your face too close to the water or the steam could scald the skin. Hold your face around 12 to 18 inches above the steaming water for five to 10 minutes. The skin will begin to sweat, indicating that the pores are releasing the impurities. Once the impurities are flushed out, the pores will be smaller. After steaming the skin, rinse the skin with cold water to further close the pores. Steam can be applied to the skin once per week to open, flush and close the pores.

Step 2

Apply a pore-closing mask that will tighten and tone the skin. Honey and baking soda help tighten and tone the skin, and lemon juice helps slough away any dead skin that could clog or open the pores to infection. Mix together 1/4 cup of honey with 2 tablespoons each of baking soda and lemon juice. Smooth the mixture onto the skin. Let the mask close and tighten the pores for five to seven minutes. Rinse the skin with warm water, and follow it with cold water to further tighten the pores. A pore-tightening mask can be used on the skin twice per week to close the pores.

Step 3

Shrink the pores dramatically by applying ice. Heat opens pores, and cold closes them. To dramatically close the pores, apply ice to the face after washing to cause the pores to contract and close. Avoid leaving ice on the face for long periods of time or it could damage the skin. Simply wipe the ice cube around on the skin without stopping for about two minutes. Repeat this process every time you wash your face to tighten and tone the pores.
