Overview

Acne bumps can be painful and irritating. If you accidentally brush your hand against them, they can leave you howling in pain. Old acne bumps might not be as painful, but they're still just as irritating. Having a bump on your skin for several months is a sign of a buildup of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria in a pore. If allowed to remain in your pore, the material can cause your pore to permanently increase in size or even form a scar. With some persistence, however, it is possible to get rid of old acne bumps.

Step 1

Take care of your skin by using a gentle cleanser each morning and night. It might sound simple, but taking the time to remove makeup, dirt and oil each morning and evening keeps your skin clean and free of debris, and prevents your pores from clogging to create new acne bumps.

Step 2

Apply a benzoyl peroxide cream to your old acne bumps. This cream is available over-the-counter and works by drying up oil and killing the bacteria within the pore. Dab the cream onto your blemishes directly using your fingertips. Don't rub hard; just gently massage it into the skin. Apply a benzoyl peroxide cream after cleansing in the morning and evening.

Step 3

Exfoliate your skin regularly. Use a scrub or chemical peel to remove the top layer of skin and allow fresh skin to grow. By performing these treatments once a week, you bring these acne bumps to the surface and allow the material within to drain or dry up. The overall texture and appearance of your skin improves as well.

Step 4

Go to your dermatologist's office and have your old acne bumps injected with diluted corticosteroid. This will help heal the lesion from the inside out and dry up the old material inside. This can also be used to drain material from acne bumps that never developed a head.

Step 5

Undergo surgery to remove your old acne bumps. Some lesions are very deep in the skin and can cause scarring if not treated. Surgery involves cutting out the entire nodule and stitching the surrounding tissue. The bump and offending material are removed all at once.
