Overview

This type of acne is very painful and doesn't go away quickly. Lesions can last months without proper treatment. Nodule acne is also more likely to cause scarring. If you struggle with this skin issue, there are treatments that will assist in getting rid of nodule acne right away and preventing future breakouts from occurring.

Step 1

Use corticosteroid injections to heal large nodule acne quicker. Normally, nodule acne can take weeks to heal. When a dermatologist injects corticosteroid into the lesion, healing time is reduced to five days or less. Find a licensed dermatologist through the American Academy of Dermatology.

Step 2

Drain nodule acne with the assistance of a dermatologist. A dermatologist is trained to drain nodule acne. Having this procedure will minimize the chances of scarring and speed up the healing time. It's important not to drain acne at home. This can result in inflammation, infection and scarring.

Step 3

Clean the skin twice daily with an acne cleanser to reduce breakouts, recommends the American Academy of Dermatology. Use a cleaner designed for acne-prone skin with the active ingredients salicylic acid, sulfur or benzoyl peroxide.

Step 4

Request antibiotics from your dermatologist. Often, nodule acne will need topical washes in addition to oral medications. Antibiotics are commonly used for moderate to severe nodule acne. Common antibiotics include tetracycline, doxycycline and trimethoprim. Take the medication as prescribed. If you don't experience results right away, don't get discouraged. Antibiotics may take a few months to reduce bacteria and minimize inflammation in the skin.

Step 5

Use the oral acne medication isotretinoin for acne that doesn't clear up with other treatment methods. This medication is taken up to five months to clear severe nodule acne. Side effects are serious and include birth defects in pregnant women. For this reason, the Food and Drug Administration requires those taking this medication to participate in a risk-management program.
