How to Get Rid of Neck Acne
Acne occurs when the skin's sebaceous glands get clogged and infected. The sebaceous glands are responsible for coating the hair protein with oil as it grows from the follicle. When this gland is clogged, a blackhead or whitehead appears. Since the human body is covered with hair, this problem can occur on the neck as well as other areas of the body. There are several preventative and treatment measures you can take to avoid acne in the neck area.
Wear clothing that does not hug or rub up against the neck. Clothing that rubs the skin creates more oils on the skin and irritates the area. Avoid wearing turtlenecks or scarves that are tight on the neck area.
Shampoo your hair daily. If you have long hair, the oils around the base of your hairline can rub up against your neck and add oil to the area. If you have long hair, wear it in a ponytail to avoid neck acne.
Purchase over-the-counter topical creams that contain benzoyl peroxide. Over-the-counter products contain 5 percent benzoyl peroxide, which kills bacteria and dries the excess oil from the skin. This prevents and treats acne on the neck and the face.
Wash your neck and face area two to three times a day with mild soap and water to prevent oil buildup and avoid acne-causing infections.
Visit a dermatologist for prescription creams or pills. A dermatologist can prescribe stronger topical creams or antibiotics if your neck acne does not improve. Antibiotics will stop infection in the pores. Medications such as Retin-A (retinoids) helps dry the oils and combat acne.
