How to Get Rid of Moderate Acne How to Get Rid of Moderate Acne

Overview

Moderate acne is an outbreak of pustules, papules, whiteheads and blackheads covering up to three-quarters of the facial skin, notes the American Academy of Dermatology. It is not as bad as the deep nodules or cysts characteristic of severe acne, but it's still annoying and unattractive. It usually responds well to store-bought topical treatments or prescription creams and oral medications. Consistent treatment will get rid of, or at least minimize, most moderate cases.

Step 1

Wash your face with mild soap and water. Harsh or abrasive soap or cleanser will irritate your acne, warns MayoClinic.com. Do not scrub the pimples or dry your face roughly, because this causes more inflammation. Dry the skin carefully with a soft, clean towel.

Step 2

Apply the acne treatment with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to your freshly washed face. Follow the directions on the label of the product. Usually, you apply it directly to the affected areas. Both benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are proven to fight the pimple types caused by moderate acne, according to MayoClinic.com.

Step 3

Tie back your hair, if it is long, so it won't hang in your face. Long hair can trap sweat and oil, worsening moderate acne. Tight hats and headbands can cause the same problem, according to MayoClinic.com, so avoid them while you are trying to get rid of your acne.

Step 4

Repeat the face washing and apply medication once or twice each day until you get rid of your moderate acne. You may not see results for several weeks, but you must continue your treatment regimen consistently. Switch to a product with a different active ingredient if you see no results at all within four weeks.
