How to Get Rid of Large Acne
Large acne, otherwise known as cystic acne, is not only embarrassing and unsightly, but it can also be extremely painful. Swollen, pus-filled blemishes create pressure under the skin, making it tender to the touch. This type of acne may be concealed with makeup, but it is better to get rid of it first, and then try and prevent it so that it doesn't happen as frequently. Get rid of your large acne by carefully cleansing and treating the skin.
Fill a pot with water and place it on the stove until it boils. Once it reaches the boiling point, remove it and allow it to cool for one minute. Draping a towel over your head, cover the pot of water with the towel so that it creates a tent over the pot for steam to collect. The steam will gently open your pores in preparation for cleansing. Stay in the steam tent for up to five minutes.
Wash your face with a mild cleanser. One of the main causes of large or cystic acne is harsh or over-drying cleansers, says QuickCare.org. These dry out your skin, causing it to create more natural oil to compensate, which builds up in your pores and causes painful, large acne just under the skin. Using a cleanser with moisturizers once per day only will keep your skin healthier and clearer.
Apply an acne cream that contains no more than 5 percent benzoyl peroxide. A higher concentration can cause even more drying. Instead, apply a thin layer of benzoyl peroxide to the large acne before you go to bed. It will make the acne noticeably smaller and less swollen overnight.
Use a moisturizer daily to replenish your skin's natural moisture and stop it from creating even more to clog your pores. Look for a moisturizer that says "hypo-allergenic" or "non-comedogenic" on the bottle, terms that mean they won't irritate your skin or clog pores.
Apply an ice cube to the large, cystic acne for a fast fix to reduce the size of the acne until it goes away. Wrapping an ice cube in a thin towel and then alternating 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off several times will cause your pores and the acne to contract. The ice cube won't get rid of the acne for good, but it will temporarily reduce the size and redness of the acne.
