Ingrown pimples are usually caused when hair becomes trapped in a follicle under the surface of the skin. This can cause irritation and infection and is more commonly experienced by individuals who have hair that curls. If the inflammation and infection are not addressed, the individual may experience scarring when the skin heals. Unfortunately, the scars seldom match the original skin and can make the healed skin nearly as unsightly as it was with active inflammation.

Step 1

Avoid shaving or tweezing hairs for several days. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, ingrown hairs can usually resolve themselves by growing through the skin. Once the hair has grown through, the inflammation, pain and itching of the ingrown pimple will begin to heal. Shaving with a disposable razor tends to create sharpened ends on the hair in the skin. This sharp end, combined with even a slight curl can trap hair under the skin, leading to an ingrown pimple. Tweezing causes a slight trauma to the skin, which can cause the next hair growing in the follicle to become trapped.

Step 2

Wash the affected areas with warm water and an antibacterial soap twice a day. According to the Mayo Clinic, washing too often or scrubbing too hard can cause additional inflammation and can make the problem worse. Use a clean soft washcloth to gently cleanse the affected areas in a circular motion. Pat the area dry with another clean washcloth, being careful not to touch areas that have already been dried.

Step 3

Use an electric razor instead of a disposable one. Avoid using a close setting on an electric razor to help prevent new ingrown pimples. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, shaving with a disposable razor causes the hair left in the follicle to be sharpened and more likely to get caught under the skin. Electric razors, on the other hand, create a blunted end on the hair, allowing it to grow without becoming lodged by a sharp end. Use a hot compress on your face for 10 minutes before shaving, to soften both the skin and the hair.

Step 4

Apply a topical antibiotic gel to the affected area twice a day after cleansing. Antibiotic gel can be found at your local pharmacy and should be applied approximately 15 minutes after cleansing. Use clean hands to apply a thin layer to the entire affected area. Infection that often accompanies ingrown pimples can, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, cause damage to the skin that can appear as significant scarring once the areas have healed. Antibiotic cream helps to prevent the ingrown pimples from becoming unsightly scars.

Step 5

Apply a topical ointment that contains hydrocortisone, twice a day after cleansing. Hydrocortisone cream reduces itching and inflammation, helping the skin to heal. Apply a thin layer to the affected area with clean hands and wait 15 minutes after applying antibiotic gel before applying hydrocortisone ointment. If the inflammation is severe, talk to your dermatologist about prescription strength hydrocortisone cream.
