How to Get Rid of Facial Pimples
Pimples occur when dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria clog the pores on your face, back or arms. They form what is referred to as a comedone. Open comedones become exposed to air, turning the blockage a brown black color, and are most commonly called blackheads. Comedones that are not exposed to the air form a white tip called a whitehead. Treating pimples requires some basic skin care practices; however, severe cases of pimples, also known as acne, may require dermatologist intervention.
Apply a thin layer of acne cream to pimples in order to dry them and remove contents. Acne creams containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid are ideal for pimples and acne flare ups, according to the Mayo Clinic. They work by eliminating the blockage within the pores and keeping them from returning.
Cleanse your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser to clean out dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria. Avoid exfoliating washes or harsh scrubbing, as this can irritate the skin and worsen acne conditions. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should also avoid astringents and facial masks.
Shampoo your hair daily to keep hair oils from redistributing on the skin, recommends the Mayo Clinic. This can worsen pimples and acne breakouts. Keeping your hair pulled back from your face and clean will allow facial pimples to heal without adding to the blockage.
Use oil-free cosmetics that are water based or marked "non comedogenic." According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, it is essential to take makeup off at night to allow your skin to breathe and pimples to heal properly. Sleeping in makeup will only worsen pimples and cause further blemish development.
Allow your pimples to come to a head and break open on their own. Do not pick or squeeze, as this could cause scarring or infection, according to the Mayo Clinic. If pimples do not come to a head or break on their own, consult your dermatologist.
