How to Get Rid of Dry Flaky Facial Skin
Skin becomes dry when it loses its ability to hold in moisture. Dry, flaky facial skin can cause you to feel uncomfortable and it may lead your skin to appear wrinkled, rough and dull, but it typically isn't a serious problem. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may require treatment from a doctor, but most dry skin is aggravated by environmental problems that you can at least partially control, according to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.
Apply a moisturizing mask once weekly. You may buy a moisturizing mask at the store but home recipes can be just as effective. Health Services at Columbia University recommends mixing 1 tsp. mayonnaise, 1 tsp. aloe vera pulp and 1 egg yolk, spreading it on your face, leaving it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then removing it with warm water.
Buy a thick moisturizer. It will give your facial skin the shield it needs to contain water. Thicker moisturizers, such as Cetaphil and Eucerin, work better than most lotions, says the MayoClinic.com. If your skin is particularly dry you may also consider applying baby oil to your face, which should remain on your skin longer than most moisturizers, says the MayoClinic.com. However, if your skin is acne-prone find moisturizers labeled "noncomedogenic," or "water-based" in order to avoid clogging pores, according to Health Services at Columbia University.
Wash your skin with a gentle cleanser. The cleanser should contain no deodorant or antibacterial detergents but it should have added oils or fats for moisture, says the MayoClinic.com. If a soap or cleanser makes your skin feel tight and dry after you wash with it, it is probably too harsh for your skin.
Take short, warm showers. Extended exposure to hot water can strip natural oils from your facial skin. Aim to shower for less than 15 minutes, says the MayoClinic.com. Also turn down the heat if the water has turned your skin red.
Apply a moisturizer immediately after you take a shower. Since moisturizers can help seal in water, the best time to apply one is within three minutes after your skin has been wet in a shower, says the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Your skin should still be damp when you moisturize, so blot it rather than rubbing it with your towel.
Use a home humidifier. Home air conditioning and heating can cause your already dry skin to dry out even more, but a home humidifier will allow you to stay moisturized even during extreme temperatures.
Talk to a doctor if your skin dryness doesn't let up or if it is accompanied by other symptoms. Severe skin dryness can cause your skin to develop cracks, which can bleed and be at risk for bacterial infections. Persistent dry skin may also be a sign of an underlying health condition such as underproduction of the thyroid hormone or an allergic reaction.
