Dark skin on elbows, and sometimes knees as well, is caused by dead skin deposited in several layers due to the way you use your elbows---such as leaning on them. In addition, if you live in an area with year-round sunny weather and you wear short sleeves, sun damage might also lead to dark elbows, according to Yoga Health Benefits. Dark skinned elbows can be prevented by scrubbing them with a loofah or brush in the shower or bath---this eliminates the dead skin. Sunscreen is also an effective preventative.
