Overview

Most people develop clogged pores at one time or another. The most common culprit is sebum--an oil excreted through the pores and onto the skin. The oil has several purposes, including helping to keep the skin moisturized, but when it accumulates in the pores it can cause inflammation, acne and, most commonly, blackheads. Blackheads are nothing more than sebum oil blockages that have oxidized and turned black. They can be cleared out using several different methods.

Step 1

Wash your face daily with soap and water. Nothing removes clogged pores better than a good face washing, which can wear down blockages, clear away freshly developed blockages, and prevent other clogs from developing. Wash your face once or twice daily to effectively clean the skin. Also use an exfoliating scrub once or twice every week. These scrubs can help to clear out your pores.

Step 2

Rub benzoyl peroxide into your skin after cleaning it. Benzoyl peroxide helps dry out the skin, clear away dead skin cells and remove excess oil from the skin. Most forms of benzoyl peroxide can be purchased over the counter, and some risks are involved, such as dryness, redness and scaling of the skin. For this reason, use benzoyl peroxide sparingly.

Step 3

Apply a salicylic acid treatment to the skin to clear out elements that can cause clogging. According to the MayoClinic.com, salicylic acid slows down the shedding of skin cells inside hair follicles--cells that can result in clogged pores over time. Salicylic acid can be purchased as an over-the-counter medication as well as in more potent prescription forms. It may also cause stinging and irritation on the skin and in the pores.

Step 4

Try applying sulfur treatments to the skin if other methods fail. This treatment has the same effect as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, although some sulfur treatments have an unpleasant smell.
