Overview

Pores are essential to the health of your skin. They allow oil to reach the surface of the skin to keep it hydrated and protect it from environmental damage. Without proper care, pores can become clogged with dead skin cells, dirt and oil, and turn into a breeding ground for bacteria. This leads to enlarged pores and acne breakouts, according to Audrey Kunin, M.D. of the DermaDoctor website. Getting rid of clogged pores is important to minimize their appearance and control or prevent acne.

Step 1

Wash your face twice each day with a mild soap and warm water to remove dirt and oil from your skin and pores. The heat and steam from a shower is also beneficial at getting rid of clogged pores. Do not wash your skin in hot water--doing so removes your skin's protective oils and causes dryness and irritation.

Step 2

Open your pores by placing a warm towel over affected areas or by boiling a pot of water on the stove and standing over the steam for several minutes. Opening your pores will make removal of clogs easier.

Step 3

Exfoliate your skin to remove the dead skin cells from your skin's surface that clog pores. Use a fine-grained exfoliant no more than two or three times each week. Too much exfoliating can irritate skin.

Step 4

Buy a commercial pore toner and apply it to your skin with clean cotton balls. Toners can help clean out clogged pores and minimize their appearance. Witch hazel is an inexpensive alternative to commercial toners, and is generally just as effective. Toners are best for oily skin because they are drying, explains the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Step 5

Use a pore-reducing mask, blackhead extractor or pore strip on individual clogged pores. These tools are available over the counter and can effectively remove blackheads and open up pores. QuickCare.com recommends using a clay mask to unclog pores and avoiding irritating ingredients, such as peppermint.

Step 6

Avoid using hot water and harsh soaps on your skin, moisturize daily with a noncomedogenic lotion and wear sunscreen every time you are outside.
