Acne is a condition that can affect skin on all areas of the body, but particularly the face. This is because there is a large accumulation of oil glands on the face, particularly on the nose, chin and forehead. These glands release an oil called "sebum," which can cause clogged pores. Mild and moderate acne can usually be controlled with over-the-counter treatments, but more stubborn cases may require a prescription acne medication.

Step 1

Stop touching your chin. If you have long hair, tie it back to keep it away from your chin. This way, oil and bacteria cannot be spread from your fingertips or hair to your chin.

Step 2

Wash your face twice a day with an oil-free acne cleanser, paying particular attention to the chin. Cleansers that work best include an effective active ingredient, such as salicylic acid, lactic acid, benzoyl peroxide or sulfur, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ideally, a daily wash should contain no fragrances and be noncomedogenic.

Step 3

Treat pimples on the chin with an over-the-counter spot treatment before going to bed. A spot treatment will dry out pimples overnight, making them appear smaller and less red in the morning.

Step 4

Consult a dermatologist if acne on the chin does not clear up with over-the-counter treatments. A dermatologist may prescribe a topical prescription medication such as Differin, Avage or Avita. Side effects of topical prescription medications are more severe than over-the-counter side effects and may include skin stinging, burning and peeling.

Step 5

Consider a short course of oral antibiotics to clear bacteria that causes acne on your chin. In severe cases of acne, bacteria may form on the skin during a breakout, causing more acne. Oral antibiotics, when prescribed for a short period of time, can help break the breakout cycle.

Step 6

Consult a dermatologist about isotretinoin if no other treatments are effective. Isotretinoin (brand name Accutane) is a strong medication that dries up the oil on the skin. Severe side effects, including vision changes, depression and thoughts of suicide, may occur, so it should only be taken under the supervision of a dermatologist.
