One of the more visible signs of aging is changes to the skin. Some of these changes are natural, such as wrinkles and dryness, while others are a result of environmental factors. Repeated sun exposure can eventually form brown spots on the skin. UV rays increase the production of melanin, a compound responsible for pigmentation. Over time, the melanin begins to stick together, forming what's often known as age spots. Any area of the body consistently exposed to the sun can develop these lentigines, including your legs. While there isn't a medical need, products and procedures can expel these spots from the skin.

Step 1

Massage hydroquinone directly into the brown spots, suggests the American Academy of Dermatology. This topical medication breaks up the clusters of melanin, causing the spots to fade over a period of several months.

Step 2

Apply a thin layer of a prescription skin lightener to the age spots. Prescription lighteners often contain higher percentages of hydroquinone or a combination of medications, such as hydroquinone, retinoids and corticosteroids, advises the Mayo Clinic.

Step 3

Undergo cryotherapy. During this procedure, the skin is exposed to a freezing agent, like liquid nitrogen or dry ice, to destroy the excess melanin responsible for the brown spots, explains the Mayo Clinic.

Step 4

Lighten the brown spots with skin rejuvenation treatments, such as chemical peels, dermabrasion or microdermabrasion. With any one of these procedures, the surface layer of the skin is removed, stimulating the production of new skin cells that lack the excess melanin from before.

Step 5

Talk to your doctor or dermatologist about laser therapy. As laser energy is administered to the skin, it breaks up the clusters of excess melanin, causing the spots to fade away.
