Overview

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a blackhead, or open comedone, is a plugged follicle that opens and turns dark at the surface of the skin. Blackheads are not trapped dirt, but rather pores that are clogged with oil and bacteria. Blackheads are smaller and less red in appearance than other whiteheads or cystic acne, but can still be quite bothersome. The best way to eliminate blackheads is to prevent them from occurring in the first place, but once you do have blackheads there are ways to treat the blemish.

Step 1

Commit to a skin-care regimen that will prevent blackheads from forming. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends washing skin twice a day with a mild cleanser, and avoiding scrubbing your skin or using facial masks. Choose makeup and moisturizers that are oil-free and "non-comedogenic," which means they will not clog your pores.

Step 2

Treat existing blackheads with over-the-counter acne products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Always apply acne medicine to clean skin and follow the instructions on the packaging.

Step 3

Wash your hair daily if it is oily. AcneNet, a service of the American Academy of Dermatology, warns that oil from your hair can get on your face, causing pores to clog and form blackheads. If your hair gets oily quickly, look for a shampoo that is specifically formulated for oily hair, or that contains tea tree oil.

Step 4

See your dermatologist if acne does not improve. It can take several weeks, or even months, for your skin-care regimen and over-the-counter products to take effect, but if your skin does not seem to be clearing, it may be time to talk to your doctor about prescription options. Your dermatologist can also extract blackheads if you have an important event and need your blemishes removed immediately.
