Overview

Getting pimples is a nuisance. However, if you pick or squeeze at them, they may leave scars. If the pores are particularly inflamed, you might just end up with black marks on your skin where the pimples used to be. Called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, these marks appear in any place where a wound has healed. If you wait a year, these marks will fade on their own. However, if you want to speed up the process, you can by following a specific treatment plan.

Step 1

Visit your dermatologist and obtain a prescription for a topical retinoid cream. This cream tends to go by the brand names Renova or Retin-A and works by speeding up the process of skin cells sloughing off. This means newer tissue comes to the surface faster, thus fading black marks faster. Apply the cream to your black marks once a day. Follow with an oil-free moisturizer to prevent redness and irritation.

Step 2

Juice lemons and soak a cotton pad in the juice. Use the juice like a toner and wipe it all over your face, concentrating especially on areas where you have black marks from pimples. After waiting a few minutes, rinse the lemon juice off with warm water. The citric acids lightens dark marks on the skin, though it can cause skin irritation. You may wish to dilute the juice with water if this occurs.

Step 3

Buy a hydroquinone cream from a local drugstore and apply to your black marks. Make sure the cream states it has no more than two percent hydroquinone in it; otherwise, you could damage your skin. Dab the cream on your marks once a day. Follow with an oil-free sunscreen as hydroquinone can make your skin hypersensitive to the sun.

Step 4

Meet with a dermatologist to review treatment options. For very dark black marks, you may need a stronger treatment to see results faster. Ask about chemical peels, in particular, as they can fade hyperpigmentation marks quickly without being severely invasive.

Step 5

Undergo a chemical peel. After your skin is cleansed, an acid will be applied to your face to peel away the top layers of skin. This may sting. After several minutes, you can expect the dermatologist to wipe off the peel and place a moisturizer on your skin to prevent irritation. After six to eight sessions, your black marks should fade.
