How to Get Rid of Acne Without Products
Acne is a problem for many people. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), between 40 and 50 million Americans suffer from this condition. The ADD states that research continues to determine the actual cause of acne. However, four common factors in the development of acne include excess oil, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation. To get rid of acne, you need to treat as many of these factors as possible.
Avoid scrubbing the skin. The AAD states that scrubbing simply irritates the skin and worsens breakouts. Do not use a washcloth or puff to scrub skin affected by acne.
Avoid letting sweat, dirt and oils touch your face. Accomplish this by keeping your hair clean, by not touching your face with your hands or dirty objects, and by avoiding tight clothing or hats when sweating. The Mayo Clinic reports that sweat, dirt and oils can make acne worse.
Keep your hair away from your face. When hair touches your face, it leaves behind oils. Your face has enough oil on it, so you do not want to make your skin more oily.
Avoid using abrasive soaps, facial scrubs, toners, astringents and masks. According to the website AcneNet, presented by the AAD, these products irritate the skin, which increases your chances of an acne breakout.
Avoid prolonged sun exposure. The Mayo Clinic reports that the sun can worsen acne in some individuals.
Avoid wearing makeup. Makeup can clog pores and result in more breakouts.
Remove any makeup prior to going to bed, if you must wear it. According to the Mayo Clinic, failing to remove makeup can increase your chances of clogged pores.
Resist picking, scratching, popping and squeezing pimples. The AAD states that doing so will worsen acne and lead to scars.
Avoid foods that cause acne. According to the AAD, some people experience a breakout after eating a certain food. If you find this is true for you, avoid eating the food that caused the breakout.
Eat a well-balanced diet. AcneAtoZ.org advises a diet consisting of whole, unprocessed foods, plenty of fruits and vegetables, foods high in healthy omega-3 oils (like flaxseeds and sardines), and at least eight glasses of water each day. You should avoid refined sugar, fried foods, trans fats, and excess chocolate, caffeine, carbonated beverages, iodized salt, shellfish and wheat.
Reduce stress levels. When you reduce stress levels, your hormone levels change and you are less likely to develop acne. Try using yoga, exercise, breathing techniques, biofeedback, massage and meditation for the purpose of stress relief.
