Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. In fact, in any given year, 85 percent of teens in the U.S. will have acne blemishes. Although it's most common in teens, acne can affect people of all ages, from infants to those in their 40s and 50s. Although exactly what causes a blemish to develop is not understood, excess oil clogging skin's pores is a major factor. You can take prescription drugs to treat and prevent acne, but you can also adopt a skincare routine at home to keep acne in check.

Step 1

Wash your face once or twice a day using a gentle facial cleanser and warm water. Always wash after exercising or sweating profusely, but try to limit facial washing to twice daily to prevent excessive drying of the skin. Dry your face completely with a clean dry towel.

Step 2

Wash your hair regularly each day. Regular hair washing is especially important if you have oily hair because the oil from your hair can be transferred to your face and clog pores, causing acne blemishes.

Step 3

Keep your hair out of and off your face, using headbands and hair ties if necessary.

Step 4

Avoid picking at or popping your acne blemishes. Although it is tempting to speed up the healing process, this can actually make acne worse or cause scarring and infections, according to MedLinePlus.
