Overview

Pores that are clogged with sebum, the body's natural oil, turn into acne, according to "Foundations of Nursing." Commonly, the body produces excess sebum because it does not feel adequately moisturized, according to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology." Although your instinct may be to dry out your oily, acne-plagued skin, doing so will prompt your body to produce more sebum. Pure shea butter, which can be purchased at health food stores, is a natural moisturizer that can reduce the amount of pimples your have and the inflammation of acne, according to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice."

Step 1

Cleanse your face gently with a facial cleanser. According to "Handbook of Dermatology: A Practical Manual," a cleanser containing salicylic acid is ideal for acne-prone skin because it encourages the sloughing of dead skin cells which could otherwise clog pores and cause pimples.

Step 2

Apply a dime-sized amount of shea butter to a cosmetic sponge. Use the cosmetic sponge to apply the shea butter to your face, focusing primarily on the acne-prone areas of your skin. Avoid touching the shea butter with your fingers as oils and bacteria can be easily transferred from your fingers to the shea butter and from the shea butter to your face, according to "Foundations of Nursing."

Step 3

Allow the shea butter to remain on your skin for at least eight hours. According to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology," allowing pure shea butter to rest on the skin for at least eight hours gives the shea butter time to fully hydrate the skin.

Step 4

Cleanse your face gently with facial cleanser. This will wash off any excess shea butter as well as cleanse the skin of dirt and bacteria. This treatment can be safely repeated as frequently as you feel necessary, though according to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," most people see favorable results by repeating this treatment two to three times per week.
