Acne typically results from the overactivity of sebaceous glands at the facial hair follicles, leading to excess oil on the skin. Conventional acne treatment involves topical retinoid and benzoyl peroxide solutions, and topical and oral antibiotics. Certain home remedies for acne also can be effective at reducing or eliminating acne. Step 1

Wash your affected skin with a gentle cleanser and warm water. Don't use other commercial cleansing products or materials, advises the Mayo Clinic. Although you might think other products can help, facial scrubs, astringent substances and commercial face masks tend to irritate skin, which can worsen acne. Excessive washing and scrubbing also can irritate skin, and so can using a washcloth or loofah.

Step 2

Apply a gel containing tea tree oil to your affected skin. Tea tree oil may decrease bacteria and inflammation, according to the UMMC. The October 1990 issue of the "Medical Journal of Australia" includes research indicating that a 5 percent tea tree oil gel significantly decreases inflamed acne. You can buy a 5 percent strength tea tree oil gel at natural food stores, or make one yourself. Combine 1/4 tsp. of 100 percent tea tree oil with 5 tsp. of pure aloe vera gel. Mix well and apply it with your fingers to affected areas after you wash your face.

Step 3

Use a face wash containing lime juice. Dab a drop of lime juice on a small area of your face first to check that it does not irritate your skin. The Grandma's Home Remedies website recommends mixing the juice of half a lime with 1/2 cup of boiled milk, cooled, and using this as a face wash. Rinse your face afterward with cool water. Another face wash consists of equal parts rose water and lime juice. Leave this solution on your face for up to 30 minutes before rinsing. You also can apply a mask containing an equal amount of organic peanut oil or sesame oil and lime juice. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes and then rinse.

Step 4

Apply fresh mint juice after washing your face before bedtime. Leave it on 15 minutes and then rinse. If the juice doesn't irritate your skin, you can repeat the process in the morning. Mint has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce redness and swelling, as explained by AyurvedicCure.com.
