Overview

For most people, acne consists of whiteheads and blackheads. These blemishes are on the surface of the skin and, though annoying, they generally do not cause scarring. However, when you develop hard lumps beneath the skin with no discernible head, you're much more likely to experience damage to your skin. These acne nodules can be difficult to treat, but it is possible with a rigorous approach.

Step 1

Use topical treatments. To eliminate acne under the skin, over-the-counter products are typically not strong enough to penetrate nodules, so acquire prescription-strength benzoyl peroxide or a retinoid like Retin-A, which encourages the skin to shed dead cells and unclog pores.

Step 2

Get injections. To heal acne from within, corticosteroids can be injected into inflamed and deep nodules in the skin to help them heal from the inside out. This type of intervention can prevent scarring and encourage your acne to heal faster than it would on its own.

Step 3

Request oral medications from your dermatologist. Oral antibiotics can help kill bacteria underneath the surface of your skin and allow the lesions to heal. Common types include minocycline, doxycycline, tetracycline and erythromycin. Another drug is isotrentin, which is used only for severe acne, like that which is deep beneath the skin. It makes oil glands smaller and encourages acne to heal. However, it can carry severe side effects like birth defects and depression, so keep that in mind before taking it.

Step 4

Make an appointment with your dermatologist to have nodules surgically removed. During this procedure, your doctor will drain lesions if they contain pus and cut out the nodules. Under a surgical environment, there is much less risk for scarring and infection than if you were to pick at the acne yourself. Scarring is usually nonexistent or minimal following surgical extraction of acne.
