Overview

Acne is a disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands produce oil known as sebum, which travels to the surface of the skin via the follicles. The follicles can become clogged, especially when the production of sebum is high. The plugged follicles may eventually burst, resulting in open acne lesions. The most effective method of getting rid of acne sores typically involves applying a topical medication to the affected area of skin or taking an oral medication.

Step 1

Receive a physical examination from a dermatologist. Your dermatologist will determine the best course of treatment for your acne based on the severity of your acne. Your general health, medical history and tolerance for medication will also affect your specific treatment.

Step 2

Apply topical medications to your skin. Medications that contain benzoyl peroxide work by inhibiting the growth of bacteria that can make acne worse. Antibiotics also help eradicate bacteria and may reduce inflammation. Tretinoin reduces the development of new lesions and unclogs pimples. Adapalene also reduces the rate of lesion formation.

Step 3

Take oral medications to get rid of acne sores. Antibiotics such as doxycycline, erythromycin and tetracycline kill the bacteria that may aggravate acne. Dermatologists commonly prescribe oral antibiotics for moderate to severe cases of acne.

Step 4

Use isotretinoin (Accutane) for severe cases of inflammatory acne. This treatment is reserved for acne sores that resist all other forms of treatment. Isotretinoin decreases the rate of oil production in the skin and also increases the rate at which your skin sheds cells. Both of these factors reduce the development of acne sores and isotretinoin is effective in 85 percent of cases, according to Howard County General Hospital. This drug has major adverse side effects and should never be taken by pregnant women or women who are planning to become pregnant.
