How to Get Rid of Acne Scabs
Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged. Once blemishes heal, some individuals experience lingering scabs. A scab is really the middle of the recovery process in which the body covers the wound to allow it to heal from within. Unfortunately, while scabs are necessary in order to get rid of acne, they, too, can look unsightly. Ways to accelerate the healing process and get rid of acne scabs involve using creams and soaps and avoiding picking at the affected area.
Don't touch the affected area. Despite the protection a scab provides, touching it can cause irritation or even add more bacteria. If you must touch the scab in order to treat it, wash your hands thoroughly with an antibacterial hand soap first.
Avoid scratching the scab or the surrounding area. This, too, can cause additional damage, adding to the amount of time required to heal the wound. Itching is a good sign, as it means the area under the scab is healing.
Apply a hot, moist compress to the scab twice daily. Be sure to use a clean towel, and don't put your hands on the area that will be held against the scab. A hot compress will help bring blood to the wound to speed healing and will also soften the scab naturally, making it come off your skin sooner than it would if left alone.
Wash your face twice a day with a facial cleanser that contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid, according to Medline Plus, keeps the skin dry and encourages dead and dry skin to fall off. Cleanse the face gently with a clean, soft cloth. Don't scrub, as this can cause irritation and inflammation.
Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic cream to the scab after washing the face. According to MayoClinic.com, antibiotic cream will help speed healing and soften the scab, encouraging it to fall off. In addition, antibiotic creams kill bacteria and prevent additional acne from appearing as a result of bacterial spread.
