Overview

Acne is the result of pores that become blocked by excess oil. It's most common during adolescence when the oil glands in the skin are at their most active. This can cause lesions to break out on the skin and may also lead to scarring in severe cases. Acne scars tend to form pits because the pores go deep into the skin. Effective treatments for acne pits include chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing and dermal fillers.

Step 1

Perform a chemical peel. Chemical peels contain a glycolic acid solution which can dissolve the top layers of skin. Home chemical peels usually contain 10 to 20 percent glycolic acid whereas chemical peels used by dermatologists typically range from 20 to 70 percent glycolic acid. You'll generally need the physician-strength chemical peels to treat acne pits effectively.

Step 2

Receive dermabrasion. This procedure may include any method of removing acne pits by mechanically removing the top layers of skin. A dermatologist typically uses a tool with diamond-tipped head that rotates at high speed, usually at least 18,000 times per minute. The dermatologist operates the tool manually, so the results of a dermabrasion depend greatly on the skill of the operator.

Step 3

Undergo laser resurfacing. These lasers produce light with a specific wavelength that the skin absorbs easily. They emit very short pulses of light that quickly heat the upper layers of skin and vaporize them. Laser resurfacing requires a longer recovery than dermabrasion. It's typically used on your face because facial skin heals quickly.

Step 4

Select a dermal filler. A dermatologist injects a dermal filler under the skin to fill out the space made by the acne pit. The primary disadvantage of dermal fillers is that the effects are usually temporary. Most dermal fillers such as collagen only last three to six months. The dermatologist may also use the patient's own fat in some cases. The effects of this procedure typically last for at least a year.
