Overview

You can get marks from acne, like scars and discolored patches, by picking or popping your pimples. Marks can also happen from a very severe case of acne, even if you don't touch the affected areas. Noticeable scars on the face can make you feel self-conscious so you may wish to get rid of them. Complete elimination may not be possible, but you can take steps to make them almost invisible. You may be able to accomplish this on your own or you may need a physician's assistance.

Step 1

Purchase an over-the-counter (OTC) acne scar gel with retinol, vitamin C or glycolic acid as its active ingredient. The American Academy of Dermatology (ADA) explains that these substances promote collagen production. This plumps up the skin which flattens depressed acne scars. An OTC skin lightening cream can be used to even out darker patches caused by acne.

Step 2

Make an appointment with a dermatologist for microdermabrasion or a skin peel if OTC treatments do not produce satisfactory results. There are home microdermabrasion and skin peel products, but the AAD warns they can be harmful if you do not use them properly. A doctor can perform the procedure more safely and effectively.

Step 3

Schedule laser resurfacing surgery if the marks still persist after non-surgical treatment. This procedure is done by a dermatologist in his office. Laser skin resurfacing removes the top skin layer, according to the Nemours children's health organization. The middle layer is tightened by the procedure which gives the skin a smoother appearance.

Step 4

Schedule fractional laser therapy if you want a procedure that is more effective and less invasive than traditional laser resurfacing. Nemours explains that this procedure works more deeply than other procedures and does not injure the top skin layer. This speeds up the recovery period.
