How to Get Rid of Acne From Steroids

Steroid drugs are powerful anti-inflammatories, and are prescribed to treat a range of health problems. Steroids can cause potential side effects ranging from weight gain to a filled out "moon face", and even acne. Getting rid of acne that's caused by steroids can be difficult at times because this class of drugs is one of the treatments for acne itself. Work with your doctor to determine the best approach to resolving your skin eruptions.

Step 1

Treat your steroid-induced acne with over-the-counter topical creams and ointments that contain drying and bacteria-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Depending on the severity of your condition, your acne may respond to these measures. Consult your doctor if you're already using topical steroids, to be sure the OTC medications are safe to use as well.

Step 2

Ask your doctor to prescribe topical steroid medications that are compounded with sulfur drugs if the reason you're using steroids is to treat inflammatory skin conditions. The June 2008 issue of the "Journal of Drugs in Dermatology" reports that people using sulfur compounds showed less incidence of acne than participants who used their usually medications without the addition of sulfur drugs.

Step 3

Get tested for yeast. Dermnet NZ, an information resource of the New Zealand Dermatological Society, explains that many people who experience steroid acne actually have a condition called malassezia folliculitis, an irritation of the skin caused by an overgrowth of yeast in your hair follicles. Anti-fungal drugs, either applied to the skin or taken orally can help you get rid of steroid-induced acne.

Step 4

Reduce the dosage of your steroid medication -- only under your doctor's orders -- or discontinue the drug to get rid of steroid acne. Dermnet NZ explains that most often your skin will clear completely after you've finished your course of medication. You might see some temporary clearing at times, however. Discuss your medication stoppage with your doctor, as some steroids require a step-down method rather than a "cold turkey" approach.
