How to Get Rid of Acne Blimishes
There isn't any treatment for acne that works overnight, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Treating acne blemishes takes an average six to eight weeks. A successful treatment program addresses all four components of acne: excess oil, inflammation, clogged pores and bacteria. For the treatment to be successful, start it sooner, rather than later.
Keep your hands and objects such as cellphones off the blemishes. Your hands and objects harbor oil and bacteria, both of which worsen acne.
Let acne-prone skin get air. Moisture and heat trapped against your skin can irritate the skin and worsen acne. If you get body acne, wear loose clothing made of moisture-wicking material or natural fibers such as cotton.
Wash blemished areas twice a day with a gentle cleanser, the Mayo Clinic advises. You risk making the acne worse if you wash more often, because scrubbing can irritate the skin. Acne isn't caused by dirt, anyway, so washing more often won't clear it up.
Shampoo your hair daily if you are prone to getting acne in areas your hair touches. Oils from your hair can make acne worse when they are transferred to your skin.
Treat the blemishes with an over-the-counter acne-fighting products. Look for products that contain sulfur, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. When you begin treatment, your skin may become dry or irritated. This is normal. If the symptoms become severe, don't stop using the medications. Instead, apply them less often.
Stay out of the sun while you are treating acne. Acne medications can make your skin sensitive to the sun, the Mayo Clinic warns. Additionally, some blemishes worsen with sun exposure.
